ALBERTA ALERT: Bill C-8 Is The Real Wolf In Sheep’s Clothing

Much ado has been made lately about Bill S-206. By that, I mean texts and posts warning Canadians that S-206 is a linchpin — the key piece in a wider plan of bad legislation. After digging into it, I do not believe S-206 is what many claim (I explained why in an earlier post). But there are bills on the floor right now that deserve far more attention.

Today I’m focusing on Bill C-8, because it has the potential to change the daily quality of life of Canadians and could be applied in ways that hit specific provinces — including Alberta — harder than others. Bill C-8 demands serious and immediate public scrutiny.

Please read the next four paragraphs carefully.

GOVERNMENT KILL SWITCH?: Bill C-8 And Citizen Infrastructure
Bill C-8 gives the federal government new control over systems Canadians rely on every day, especially the internet and mobile networks. It does not target people directly, but it controls the systems people need to work, learn, communicate, bank, and get help in emergencies. If these systems are slowed or disrupted, daily life is affected immediately. That makes this bill about personal freedom, even if no individual is named.

HIDDEN POWER: Quiet Regulatory Growth Without Safeguards
Bill C-8 is built to grow over time. It allows the federal Cabinet to add new rules later without another full vote in Parliament. Many of these rules, and the orders made under them, can be kept out of public view. There are no clear limits written into the bill to stop this growth. Canadians are asked to trust this power will be used carefully. Trust in our current federal government — especially here in Alberta — is at an all-time low.

PROVINCIAL TARGETING: Regional Shutdowns Now Possible
Bill C-8 does not specifically name Alberta or any province, but it allows the federal government to give orders to companies that run internet, energy, and other key systems. These systems are divided into regions and zones, often along provincial or local lines. This means actions could affect one area without touching the rest of the country. There is no requirement for clear public notice — or even confirmation — that action is being taken. People could feel the effects without any announcement from Ottawa.

FEDERAL OVERREACH: Ottawa Creeps Into Electrical And Energy Turf (Again)
Telecommunications are clearly federal territory. But electricity, power generation, and local energy systems are mainly provincial responsibilities. Bill C-8 crosses that line by regulating the computer systems that run power grids and energy infrastructure. While the bill does not openly say Ottawa can shut off electricity, it allows federal orders that could force operators to limit, isolate, or shut down systems for “security” reasons. That puts Ottawa back into provincial electrical and energy turf — again.

CONCLUSION
Taken together, these four points raise serious concerns. Bill C-8 risks interfering with access to the internet and vital services. It gives Ottawa quiet power that can expand without clear limits or public debate. It allows region-specific impacts without notice. And it pushes federal authority into areas meant to be provincial.

But the bigger question is this: why do we need this bill at all? Where is the evidence of serious, widespread cybersecurity threats that justify such sweeping powers?
How many Canadians have faced cyber incidents that require this level of control?
So far, that case has not been made.
What we are being asked to accept looks like much, much dangerous ado about nothing. Bill C-8 should be killed — and killed immediately.
