India just hosted the 18th BRICS Summit in New Delhi on September 12–13, 2026, under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s chairship. Its official theme was “Building for Resilience, Innovation, Cooperation and Sustainability,” with discussions spanning trade, payments, energy, technology, food security, supply chains, and major conflicts affecting global commerce.
What BRICS is
BRICS began as a forum for Brazil, Russia, India and China; South Africa joined later. It has expanded into an 11-member grouping that also includes Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia and Indonesia. The bloc represents roughly half of the world’s population and around 40% of global GDP, though those figures mask substantial differences in economic size, political systems, and strategic priorities among members.
India took over its fourth BRICS chairship on January 1, 2026; it had previously chaired in 2012, 2016 and 2021.
