In 1927, five Alberta women challenged the prevailing interpretation that women were not “qualified persons” eligible for appointment to the Senate.
They lost before the Supreme Court of Canada. But they did not stop. They pursued their case to the Judicial Committee of the Privy Council, then Canada’s highest court of appeal, and in 1929 they won.
Those women did not bring about change by remaining silent. They organized, challenged the accepted legal order and persisted beyond their initial defeat.
Imagine if they had been dismissed as extremists for questioning what those in authority insisted was settled.
