Before you listen to Carney blame Trump for the Stelco layoffs, read this, when your done you will see that the LIBERALS have allowed massive amounts of Steel and other products to be dumped in Canada, by the CHINESE
__
Around 400,000 tonnes of Chinese steel products entered Canada in 2025, down sharply from prior years, amid anti-dumping duties, countervailing duties, and a 25% surtax. Exact “dumped” volumes are not published as a single aggregate figure, because dumping is determined case-by-case under Canada’s Special Import Measures Act (SIMA) for specific products rather than for all steel.

Recent import volumes
2025: ~400,000 tonnes (down 38% year-over-year from ~650,000 tonnes). China’s share of Canada’s steel imports fell to about 6%.

2023–2024: Over 600,000 tonnes in 2023 (valued at roughly $1.3 billion CAD) and around 650,000 tonnes in 2024. Chinese steel + aluminum imports nearly doubled from ~357,000 tonnes in 2020 to ~690,000 tonnes in 2024.

Overall Canadian steel imports also declined in 2025 (to ~2.4 million tonnes from 3.1 million in 2024).
These figures primarily cover primary and semi-finished steel products tracked by industry sources such as the Canadian Steel Producers Association (CSPA) and Global Affairs Canada monitoring data. They do not fully capture steel embedded in finished goods (e.g., vehicles or fabricated articles).
Anti-dumping and related measures
Canada maintains numerous anti-dumping (AD) and countervailing (CVD) duties on Chinese steel products. China accounts for a large share of Canada’s steel-related trade remedies (dozens of active findings covering rebar, oil country tubular goods/OCTG, corrosion-resistant and cold-rolled sheet, plate, wire, fasteners, strapping, and others).
CBSA regularly collects duties on subject imports (examples from recent reviews: hundreds of thousands to several million CAD on specific products such as rebar or OCTG over multi-year periods).
Margins of dumping in investigations have often been substantial (e.g., tens of percent of export price for non-cooperative exporters).
Expiry reviews have repeatedly found a likelihood of continued or resumed dumping from China if measures were allowed to lapse, citing China’s excess capacity, low capacity utilization in some segments, and ongoing interest in the Canadian market.
In October 2024 Canada imposed a 25% surtax on Chinese steel and aluminum (later reinforced with melt-and-pour origin rules and tariff-rate quotas on non-FTA steel imports). These layers of duties and quotas have contributed to the sharp drop in volumes in 2025, though some categories still show residual Chinese shipments and duty collections.

Bottom line
Chinese steel imports peaked near or above 600–650k tonnes in the early-to-mid 2020s and have since fallen to ~400k tonnes under heavier trade restrictions. A significant portion of the subject (covered) products has been found dumped or subsidized in successive CBSA/CITT proceedings, which is why the duties and surtaxes remain in place. Comprehensive public data on the precise tonnage sold “below normal value” across all steel categories is not aggregated in one official statistic.

I voted last night after work - at least 100 people in line ahead of me, I think it took more than an hour. The lady at the door said it was up and down all day, but said lots of people voting early. Yes to the 9, Option 2!!!!!
On a sad note, I saw several of the 4 x 8 independence signs had been vandalized on the way in to work this morning. Why is the left so violent? I believe it's because they don't have a good argument to stay.
