A major Aboriginal title case is heading toward a nine-month trial in 2029 β and the stakes are enormous.
βοΈ The Mowachaht/Muchalaht First Nation is seeking Aboriginal title over approximately 4,300 kmΒ² of Vancouver Island.
Thatβs nearly 14% of the entire island. π³
π The claimed territory stretches inland from Yuquot (Friendly Cove) along Nootka Sound and includes the communities of Gold River and Tahsis.
π² Much of the area is covered by forestry licences β meaning decades of timber harvesting, forest management and economic activity are part of the legal battle. A pulp and paper mill in Gold River closed in 1999 and the last cedar sawΒmill in TahΒsis closed in 2001.
π° The comΒbined popΒuΒlaΒtions of the Mowachaht/ MuchaΒlaht peoples is about 600. The First Nation is also seeking compensation for timber harvested going back decades.
The B.C. government acknowledges that Aboriginal title may exist in portions of the claimed territory β but disputes that title can be established across the entire 4,300 kmΒ².
The province says the claimants must prove sufficient and exclusive occupation dating back to the mid-1800s, along with a continuing connection to the land.
There are also overlapping claims involving other First Nations: the Ehattesaht, K'Γ³moks, We Wai Kai and Wei Wai Kum First Nations.
ποΈ B.C. is asking the court to dismiss the claim and is opposing retroactive compensation.
But here's the bigger question:

π¨π¦ British Columbians deserve to understand what is being claimed, what is at stake β and who ultimately pays if the courts recognize extensive Aboriginal title and decades of compensation.

βThe real story they missed
According to the Times, Carney spent more than an hour at their offices in midtown Manhattan for a wide-ranging interview. Toward the end of their report on the interview, the Times dropped the nugget that would concern Washington the most: Carney wants an end to the U.S. dollar as the global reserve currency.
βMr. Carney on Wednesday also reiterated his long-held view that a global financial system wholly dependent on the U.S. dollar was unsustainable. A move to a multipolar system in which there are several reserve currencies would βprovide more flexibility,β he said,β the Times reported.
He also admitted that there would need to be changes and a liberalization of Chinaβs currency and financial markets for this to happen.β
βThatβs a declaration of war,β a friend said to me after I read the passages about the currency issue from the New York Times report.
