Between 1897 and 1914, approximately 600,000 Americans migrated to the Canadian Prairies to clear land. Driven by the Canadian government's "The Last Best West" campaign, they paid a $10 fee for a 160-acre (quarter-section) homestead in exchange for physically clearing the land and building a home within three years.

The Attraction: The Canadian government aggressively advertised throughout the US Midwest. Americans, many of whom were tenant farmers, sought cheaper alternatives to the rising land rents and prices in the United States.
Strict Requirements: Modeled on the US Homestead Act, the Dominion Lands Act required settlers to live on the land for at least six months a year, build a habitable house (often a soddy or log cabin), and cultivate a specific portion of the acreage annually.
