Last week, a judge blocked the Stay Free Alberta petition by arguing that Albertans aren't allowed to collect signatures on a petition without first consulting indigenous peoples.

While indigenous consultation before governments take certain specific actions is important, the idea that regular Albertans need permission to collect the signatures of their fellow citizens is absurd.

No matter where you stand on Alberta independence - whether you support Alberta remaining in Canada or leaving - one thing that should unite all of us is that Albertans deserve the right to vote on this and other important issues that affect our province.

That's why I've penned an open letter to Premier Danielle Smith asking her to ensure Albertans still get the opportunity to vote on this important question facing our province, alongside the other referendum questions ...
