Someone was asking earlier how many recall petitions were still out there. Here’s that info from this week’s Alberta Institute report.
“Half of the recall petitions launched against United Conservative Party MLAs have now failed, with four more efforts recently falling short, according to Elections Alberta. One of the unsuccessful campaigns targeted Agriculture Minister R.J. Sigurdson, gathering only about 9% of the nearly 16,000 signatures required to trigger a vote in his riding. Petitions against other caucus members, including Muhammad Yaseen and Speaker Ric McIver, also failed to meet the threshold, while one effort was withdrawn before the deadline. There are still 12 active petitions against UCP members, including one aimed at the premier, as well as two targeting Alberta NDP MLAs. An Alberta judge has sentenced a transgender parent to five years in prison for stabbing his two children, a term that falls on the higher end of the scale for such offences.
Alice Michael Attwood received the sentence in provincial court. The Crown had been seeking five and a half years, while the defence argued for a term of three to four years.
He had pleaded guilty to aggravated assault.
Honourable Justice J. Sihra said the severity of the crimes demanded a strong response from the court.
"A clarion call of deterrence and denunciation is required in this case due to the gravity of the offences and the aggravating factors," said Sihra.
The judge emphasized the need to protect children as a fundamental value of Canadian society.
