Yesterday @SMRavens wondered how the left-right split on council ended up. Here’s Common Sense Calgary’s assessment.

Calgary voters have spoken - and the message was clear.
After years of frustration over high taxes, costly pet projects, and misplaced priorities, voters sent a signal that it’s time for change at City Hall.
While several close races are headed for recounts, the overall results show that Calgarians were very tired of their incumbent Councillors.
Just four incumbents are returning to City Hall, and they include two right-leaning and two centrist Councillors.
Every left-leaning member of Council either didn’t run again, or has been soundly defeated - including Jyoti Gondek, who becomes the first incumbent Mayor to lose a re-election campaign in 45 years.
In the end, she didn’t even finish second - slumping to third with just 20%.
So, who was successful and what will Council look like for the next four years?
Let’s take a look at the top two place-getters in each race:
Mayor
In the Mayoral race, Jeromy Farkas (Independent) was elected with 91,071 votes, narrowly beating Sonya Sharp (Communities First) who pulled in 90,488.
Ward 1
Kim Tyers (Communities First) led the field with 7,806 votes, followed by Joey Nowak (The Calgary Party) at 7,332.
Ward 2
Incumbent Jennifer Wyness (Independent) retained her seat with 8,872 votes, ahead of John Garden (A Better Calgary Party) with 6,106.
Ward 3
Andrew Yule (Independent) earned 9,842 votes, with Christy Edwards (A Better Calgary Party) in second, receiving 3,949.
Ward 4
DJ Kelly (The Calgary Party) finished first with 11,881 votes, followed by Jeremy Wong (Communities First) with 10,443.
Ward 5
Incumbent Raj Dhaliwal (Independent) was re-elected with 6,242 votes, while Aryan Sadat (Independent) received the next highest number at 3,719.
Ward 6
John Pantazopoulos (Independent) led with 12,893 votes, ahead of Joanne Birce (Independent) with 6,610.
Ward 7
Myke Atkinson (Independent) earned 8,527 votes, with incumbent Terry Wong (Communities First) losing his seat with 7,245.
Ward 8
Nathaniel Schmidt (Independent) finished with 8,806 votes, ahead of Cornelia Wiebe (Communities First) with 7,754.
Ward 9
Harrison Clark (Independent) received 4,845 votes, while Gar Gar (Independent) got 4,578.
Ward 10
Incumbent Andre Chabot (Communities First) held on easily with 8,815 votes, while Nickie Brockhoff (The Calgary Party) finished next closest to him at 3,048.
Ward 11
Rob Ward (Communities First) secured 21,022 votes, far ahead of controversial incumbent Kourtney Penner (Independent), who received only received 8,392.
Ward 12
Mike Jamieson (A Better Calgary Party) finished narrowly ahead with 6,848 votes, just 29 more than Sarah Ferguson (The Calgary Party) at 6,819 - likely triggering a recount.
Ward 13
Dan McLean (Communities First) earned 16,339 votes, crushing his only opponent Elliot Weinstein (The Calgary Party) who had 8,823.
Ward 14
Landon Johnston (Independent) received 9,184 votes, ahead of Devin Elkin (Independent) with 5,417.
Overall, these results suggest Council will include 6 roughly left-leaning, 2 roughly centrist, and 6 roughly right-leaning Councillors.
This would be a far more balanced lineup than the previous term.
If this holds after the recount process is complete, Calgarians will have sent a clear message that it’s time to bring some common sense back to City Hall.

Does anyone know what voter turnout was like in Calgary this election? I know that Edmonton was second lowest since 1980. Up here in Grande Prairie it’s about 13% I’m told st this time. What a joke up here. I’ve figured it out and if there’s correct up here, our mayor, incumbent, won with less than 5% support at the end of the day. And people complain. I’m tired of this crap. 💩
