"Why C.S. Lewis’ That Hideous Strength May Be the Most Prescient Novel of the Last 100 Years

In this book, C.S. Lewis wrote a prophecy about the modern world. Here are 3 areas in which it's frighteningly on target:

1. A Return to “Noble Paganism”

In That Hideous Strength, the young academic Mark Studdock joins a progressive think tank — the N.I.C.E. — only to discover that its leaders have no anchor for truth, beauty, or goodness.

He begins as a secular man chasing career and status… but something inside him starts to awaken.

Lewis writes:

“As the desert first teaches men to love water, or as absence reveals affection, there rose up against this background of the sour and the crooked some kind of vision of the sweet and the straight.”

He’s not yet a Christian — but he’s longing for the Normal. For goodness. For moral reality.

That’s what Lewis meant by “noble paganism” — the soul beginning to awaken from secular progressivism, recognizing that there must be a divine Law behind all things.

We’re seeing that same awakening today. Some people are tired of the sour and crooked. They’re not  Christian yet, but they’re craving what Lewis called “the sweet and the straight.”

2. The Collapse of Purely Secular Progressivism

The N.I.C.E. begins as a dream of “progress” detached from God. Early on, they twist words to conceal their real motives.

By the end, language itself breaks down. Lewis closes the story with a chilling picture — the “curse of Babel” falling on the organization:

“Whoever will not obey the word of the Lord, even the word of man will be taken from him.”

When truth is no longer rooted in reality, words lose meaning. Sound familiar?

When “man” and “woman” become elastic terms, when “justice” can mean anything, when “love” means approval — communication collapses.

Lewis saw that coming. He warned that when we unmoor language from God, our culture will soon lose even the ability to think clearly.

3. The Fusion of Science and Sorcery

Lewis also foresaw the unholy alliance between technology and spiritual rebellion.

The scientists at the N.I.C.E. think they’re chasing progress — but by the end, their actual plan is revealed: resurrecting the oldest temptation: “You shall be as gods.”

That’s the world we’re living in.

The line between scientific “advancement” and spiritual delusion is blurring again — whether in transhumanism, AI messianism, or attempts to engineer human nature itself. (There are strong threads of this in the "conservative side" - Thiel, Musk, etc.)

And yet… paradoxically, we’re also witnessing the first flickers of revival.

When evil begins to look evil again, good begins to look good again.

Like Mark Studdock, many modern people are waking up — realizing that pure secularism leads to chaos.

They’re rediscovering moral law, human nature, and transcendence. They’re not all Christians yet, but they’re becoming open to the God who gives order and meaning.

As Spurgeon once said,

“The needle of the law pulls the thread of the gospel.”

Lewis saw all this coming — the death of meaning, the hunger for order, and the stirrings of spiritual renewal.

He diagnosed our age. It's up to us to walk back toward sanity."

Throughout the U.S. tariff dispute, our team has worked to strengthen Alberta’s relationship with our American allies by reminding them that North American prosperity and U.S. energy dominance cannot happen without Alberta oil and gas powering the way.

It’s encouraging to see our two nations’ relationship improving and that both sides recognize the mutual benefit of increasing Canadian oil exports to the U.S. as a cornerstone of our future trade relationship.

Copy and post Information:
“Do you really believe Mark Carney has found a new way to “balance the books”?

His latest fiscal plan isn’t innovation, it’s accounting gymnastics.
By splitting the federal budget into an “operating” side and a “capital” side, Carney can claim he’s restoring discipline while quietly moving billions in spending off the main ledger.

Experts warn this allows Ottawa to reclassify regular expenses as “investments,” making the numbers look better without actually cutting costs or debt.
It’s a political illusion.
Carney is playing a shell game with your tax dollars.

Remember, when dealing with a banker the details they want you to skip are in the fine print.”
