BREAKING: Alberta Prosperity Project has officially filed the Citizens' Initiative Act application for a Constitutional Petition Question - following the Bill 54 amendments.
Now we wait for approval.
ALBERTA REFERENDUM RULES CHANGE THIS JULY 4TH.
The biggest difference between the old and new referendum rules in Alberta, as outlined in the Election Statutes Amendment Act, 2025 (Bill 54):
Signature Threshold for Referendums:
Old Rules: Required signatures from 20% of all registered voters for constitutional referendum proposals (approximately 600,000 signatures) and 10% of registered voters for legislative or policy proposals. Constitutional referendums also needed signatures from 20% of electors in at least two-thirds of Alberta’s electoral divisions.
New Rules: Lowers the threshold for all citizen-initiated referendums (constitutional, legislative, or policy) to 10% of the eligible voters who voted in the last general election (approximately 177,000 signatures, based on voter turnout).
This significantly reduces the number of signatures needed, making it easier to initiate referendums, including on controversial issues like Alberta Independence.
Signature Collection Period:
Old Rules: Petitioners had 90 days to collect the required signatures for a citizen-initiated referendum.
New Rules: Extends the collection period to 120 days, giving petitioners more time to gather signatures.
The wheels of justice are still moving, albeit slowly.
