Alberta Premier Danielle Smith has met with Donald Trump at Mar-a-Lago, on the cusp of president-elect 's inauguration.

Smith joined Canadian businessman Kevin O'Leary and prominent psychologist Jordan Peterson.

Smith, who plans to attend the inauguration, has been vocal about Trump's threat to impose a 25% tariff on Canadian goods unless border security concerns are remedied.

Some say she has taken on the role of national leader in the absence of Justin Trudeau.

"We had a friendly and constructive conversation during which I emphasized the mutual importance of the U.S. - Canadian energy relationship, and specifically, how hundreds of thousands of American jobs are supported by energy exports from Alberta," said Smith on Twitter.

"I was also able to have similar discussions with several key allies of the incoming administration and was encouraged to hear their support for a strong energy and security relationship with Canada."

Smith recently appeared on American T.V. explaining the case for positive trade relations with the U.S. and her upcoming inauguration attendance.

"Alberta has a $188 billion cross-border trade relationship with the United States," she said in a Fox News broadcast.

"I want to talk to as many members of the incoming administration as I can to make sure the trading partnership stays strong, and know that we're here as a friend and ally, we're here to help."

Smith recently announced Alberta will work with Enbridge, via a working group with the Alberta Petroleum Marketing Commission, to increase oil exports to the U.S.

The initiative could find support with Trump, who has spoke of the U.S. becoming a global energy powerhouse.

“The world needs more Alberta oil and gas, and we need to make sure Alberta is meeting those needs," said Smith.

She has also announced a new program to better protect the province's nearly 300 km border with the U.S. — some say in response to Trump's tariff threat.

EQUALIZATION

Federal equalization has not only outgrown its original purpose, but has been purposefully rewritten to automatically increase every year, which makes absolutely no economic sense.

It is least understood federal programme in Canada. Even though the current formula was implemented by Harper it was supposed to be part of a grand bargain - more equalization in return for pipelines to make Canada and energy superpower. However, provinces like PQ gladly took the higher equalization formula, but still rejected projects like Energy East and LNG export terminals.

Trudeau quietly extended that formula twice with no negotiations with any of the provinces. There is nothing scared about the existing equalization formula. It is not written in stone, it is not a constitutional right, it is not part of the Meech Lake Accord. Those are all myths.

This crooked “chief” likes his kickbacks:
A prominent First Nation leader in northern Alberta, Chief Allan Adam of the Athabasca Chipewyan First Nation (ACFN), is facing criticism after records revealed he received $55,000 from the American Tides Foundation to oppose oilsands development.

The payment, disclosed in a US tax filing, was made to a numbered company linked to Adam and other ACFN officials.

The money was used to support political activities against the oilsands, including Adam’s appearance alongside singer Neil Young at an anti-oil event in Toronto.

The event, which targeted Canada’s energy sector, was criticized as being orchestrated by foreign interests.

Though the money was routed through layers of corporate ownership, a search of Alberta’s corporate registry confirmed links to Adam and other elected officials.

The Tides Foundation has a history of funding ...
