I will say this about Alberta separating or becoming the 51st state...

I have never in my almost 40 years of living in Alberta felt that this is a possibility more than I do right now. It feels like everything is lining up like never before. And I'm ok with that. I've always been one to write down PROs and CONs and honestly the only CON I can see to Wexit or 51st State is an emotional connection to the idea of "Canada". Canada is not a serious country and the more I learn about it the more I realise that not only have we never been but we can never be one without major overhaul. PROs and CONs that I see (and I look forward to hearing yours):

PROs to separating:

  • we keep all the toys (resources, money, taxes) and get rid of being the cash cow for Laurentian elites and poor cousins in the Maritimes
  • we control international trade and manufacturing
  • we leave the useless monarchical commonwealth chains

PROs to 51st State:

  • we become part of the best and strongest country in the world
  • strong military
    ...

I posted this as a comment on one of @SMRavens posts, but I thought it deserved its own post:
Why the hell aren't we stopping mass immigration? Why aren't we kicking out the known terrorists or the Chinese influencing our elections? Why aren't we rounding up the students who have student visas but haven't shown up for a single class? Why aren't we kicking out the known drug dealers? Why isn't anyone else asking this? Everybody's hair is on fire about the tariffs, but nobody is talking about WHY Trump brought it up in the first place.

“Trudeau: “They should also put their country first, as every single premier — except Danielle Smith — did.”

Smith: “His Dad crushed the lives of thousands in our province…we won’t let his son do it to our people again. Never.”

What if the unthinkable occurs, and Alberta leaves? What then?

Trudeau and his new friends are calling for a trade war with Trump’s America. They want to use Alberta as the sacrificial lamb. Premier Smith basically says, “Fool me once”.

We are headed for the cliff. Maybe we should think this through.

The idea of Alberta and western separation has been around for a long time. It began to be publicly discussed in the 1970s when Pierre Trudeau started playing fast and loose with Alberta’s gas and oil, but turned into a raging fire when Pierre was re-elected in 1980, and brought in his infamous National Energy Program (NEP.) Those of us of a certain age well remember Elmer Knutson, and the even ...
